Book cover detail, "The Spiral Staircase"
Faith's Journey
Story aired: Wednesday, April 07, 2004

As a teenager, Karen Armstrong fell in love with the idea of serving God.
She became a nun, but several years later she left the convent, psychologically traumatized; her faith in God shattered.

For years she struggled to find her place in the world, a journey that eventually led to her groundbreaking book, "A History of God." The book is an exploration of the unity she discovered at the root of the three great monotheistic religions.

In her latest book, Karen Armstrong tells the story of her life. It is both a spiritual and very worldly odyssey called "The Spiral Staircase."
